“Irumudi” Movie Review
“Ravi Teja rediscovers his soul in a heartfelt father-daughter drama that brings out the actor behind the Mass Maharaja.”
Ravi Teja gives it his all in Irumudi, a film that allows the “Mass Maharaja” to step away from his familiar high-energy persona and embrace a more restrained, emotionally driven performance. After a difficult run at the box office, this feels like a refreshing change of direction, giving the actor an opportunity to reconnect with audiences through vulnerability rather than swagger.
Directed by Shiva Nirvana, Irumudi revolves around Trinadh, a rural auto-rickshaw driver and small-time businessman whose life begins to fall apart because of alcoholism. His young daughter Manikanta, played beautifully by Baby Nakshathra, becomes the emotional anchor of his life. His wife Kaveri, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, watches helplessly as the man she once knew slowly loses himself.
The father-daughter relationship is the film’s biggest strength. Manikanta’s genuine concern for her father motivates Trinadh to give up alcohol and undertake the 41-day Ayyappa Deeksha. The spiritual journey becomes a powerful symbol of his attempt to rebuild himself, restore his family and become a better father.
The first half takes its time establishing the characters and their emotional world. Rather than rushing into action, Shiva Nirvana allows the audience to understand Trinadh’s struggles and the impact of his choices. This measured approach gives the emotional moments greater weight.
Ravi Teja is particularly impressive in these quieter portions. He relies less on dialogue and physical energy, instead communicating pain, guilt, fear and affection through expressions and silences. Baby Nakshathra is equally convincing, bringing remarkable naturalness and maturity to her role.
The Ayyappa Deeksha portions are visually rich and emotionally sincere. GV Prakash Kumar’s music and background score add tremendous value, with songs such as “Irumudi Kattu” becoming an integral part of the storytelling.
The second half expands the story into a suspense thriller involving missing girls and a dangerous predator. The tonal shift is handled with confidence, while Shiva Nirvana maintains a grounded visual style.
Though a few confrontation scenes feel conventional, the emotional payoff in the climax lands effectively. Ultimately, Irumudi is a sincere and ambitious film, elevated by Ravi Teja’s heartfelt performance, Baby Nakshathra’s impressive debut and GV Prakash Kumar’s evocative music. Most importantly, it shows Ravi Teja in a new light—and proves that sometimes restraint can make a star shine even brighter.
