India’s daily cases cross 40,000 mark in 111 days
India’s daily cases of Covid-19 crossed the 40,000 mark for the first time in 111 days as the sharp surge in the pandemic continued on Friday, with as many as 17 states and Union territories adding the highest number of infections since January or earlier.
India reported 40,944 new cases on Friday, up from 39,703 recorded on the previous day.
Maharashtra recorded 25,681 fresh cases on Friday, marginally lower than its highest ever count of 25,833 reported on the previous day. Mumbai logged 3,063 new cases, the highest ever single-day addition of Covid infections in the city.
Active cases had risen to nearly 2.9 lakh on Friday, having surged by more than 54,000 in the past three days. Over 19,000 active cases were added to India’s count on Thursday, the highest single-day rise since September 10, when the pandemic was at its peak with over 90,000 daily cases being recorded.
