India’s Covid tally crosses 56 lakh mark

Idia’s coronavirus tally crossed the 56-lakh mark today on account of around 83,000 new cases in the last 24 hours. Death toll from the virus in India has increased by 1,053 to reach 88,935, as per the latest updates.

6,62,79,462 samples tested up to 22nd September for Covid-19. Of these, 9,53,683 samples were tested yesterday, says Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The number of active Covid-19 cases in India dropped sharply as recoveries continued to exceed new cases, according to data from the health ministry.

Active cases declined by 27,438 to 975,861 on Tuesday. Recoveries of 101,468 took the total to more than 4.49 million, or 81% of the cases reported so far.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra’s Amravati rose by 393 to reach 11,578 on Tuesday, while eight deaths took the toll to 247, an official said. The number of people who have recovered from the infection here reached 8,689 after 179 people were discharged from hospitals during the day, he added.

India’s cases per million population – at 4,031– are among the lowest globally, according to data available with the health ministry. The figure for the world is 3,965. But the overall situation is under control, Paul added. India also has the lowest mortality rate in the world, health ministry officials said.
