The total coronavirus cases in India have surged to 1,855,745 while the death toll has climbed to 38,938, as per the data released by the Health ministry. Worldwide, the pandemic has now taken nearly 7 lakh lives, with 18 million confirmed cases.
52,509 new Covid cases and 857 fatalities reported in last 24 hours, said the Health Ministry, adding that India’s active Covid-19 caseload stands at 5,86,244 while 12,82,215 people have recovered so far.
Wednesday marked the seventh consecutive day that Covid-19 cases increased by more than 50,000 in the country. Maharashtra, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the key states to watch.
Former Maharashtra chief minister and senior Congress leader Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar passed away early on Wednesday morning. The 91-year-old had recently recovered from the novel coronavirus, his family said. In other news, Anil Rathod, a five-time former MLA of the Shiv Sena from Ahmednagar also died this morning. He had tested positive for Covid-19.
According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 2,14,84,402 samples have been tested till August 4 with 6,19,652 samples being tested on Tuesday.
The gap between the recoveries and the active cases has seen a steady rise. On 10th June 2020, for the first time, the total number of recovered patients exceeded the active cases with a difference of 1,573. This has now increased to 6,44,211.
As the novel coronavirus has forced Indians to eat more home-cooked food — eateries haven’t fully reopened, while the ban on weddings and social functions remains — it is also showing up in the pattern of edible oil consumption.
