India’s coronavirus tally crosses 26 lakh

India’s Covid-19 tally crosses the 26-lakh barrier on Monday, as per the latest health ministry numbers Deaths due to the coronavirus are now 50,921. Globally, the virus has taken over 7 lakh lives.

India’s coronavirus tally rose to 26,47,663 today with a single-day spike of 57,981 infections, while the death toll crossed the 50,000 mark with 941 fresh fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The recoveries surged to 19,19,842, pushing the recovery rate to 72.51 per cent. The total number of tests for detection of Covid-19 also crossed the three crore mark in India, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research data.

As many as 57,982 new cases were reported in the country, taking the tally to 26,47,664. Of the 26 lakh cases, at least 19 lakh have recovered, while over 6.7 lakh are still active. India has been reporting over 60,000 cases daily since August 7, barring August 11 when the country registered 53,601 new instances of the infection.

A heat map based on state-wise Covid-19 data developed by the Department of Economic Affairs in the Union Finance Ministry reveals that economic indicators including electricity consumption, e-way bill generation and MNREGA work creation, are looking better in states with higher control over cases and recoveries.

The United States surpassed 170,000 coronavirus deaths on Sunday, according to a Reuters tally, as health officials express concerns over COVID-19 complicating the fall flu season. Deaths rose by 483 on Sunday, with Florida, Texas and Louisiana, leading the rise in fatalities.

The World Health Organization has reported that the number of confirmed global coronavirus cases has increased by more than 2,94,000 in 24 hours — the highest figure so far.
