India’s Coronavirus count crosses 70,000, deaths near 2,300

India has reported 70,756 confirmed cases including 46,008 active cases, while 22,454 persons were cured/discharged across the country and 2,293 deaths so far.

As per the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,the recovery rate in the country stands at 31 per cent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hinted that lockdown may be extended beyond May 17. However, there may be some more relaxations to States.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways has resumed passenger train operations on select routes. Talks are going on whether domestic flight service will also be started after May 17.

The number of cases of the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the United States have surpassed 80,000, according to the John Hopkins University tracker.

The World Health Organization’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there are around seven or eight “top” candidates for a vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus and work on them is being accelerated.

In India, the state of Maharashtra has emerged as the epicenter of the coronavirus spread where the number of cases witnessed a massive spike recently. According to the Health Ministry, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases with over 23,000 positive cases of infection and more than 860 deaths.

Notably, Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, has become the hotbed of the coronavirus spread in the state where the number of cases has crossed the 14,500-mark and the death toll is nearing the 530-mark as well.
