India’s Corona count nears 24 lakh, 942 deaths in last 24 hours

India on Thursday registered the highest single-day spike of 66,999 cases and reported 942 deaths in the last 24 hours. The country’s coronavirus tally touched 23,96,638 including 6,53,622 active cases, 16,95,982 discharged and 47,033 deaths.

Globally, over 20 million (20,532,835) people have been infected with the novel coronavirus, including 747,845 deaths. The United States continues to remain the worst affected followed by Brazil and India. Amid race for an effective vaccine worldwide, Russia has approved a coronavirus vaccine for public use without the final phase of human trials.

At its first meeting on Wednesday, the National Expert Group on vaccine administration for Covid-19 held detailed deliberations on modifying existing technology platforms to track potential vaccines from procurement to last-mile delivery.

Zydus Cadila on Thursday launched the cheapest generic version of Gilead Sciences’ antiviral drug remdesivir in India to treat Covid-19 following reports of shortages at hospitals in the world’s third-worst hit nation. Zydus has priced it at Rs 2,800 ($37.44) per 100mg vial. It will be sold under the brand name Remdac to government and private hospitals treating Covid-19 patients, the company said in a regulatory filing.

A committee of seven Supreme Court judges is learnt to have recommended holding physical hearings in at least two or three of the 15 benches in the apex court as early as next week with some additional safety measures, PTI reported. In the last week of July, the 7- judge panel headed by senior most judge Justice N V Ramana had apprised the bar leaders of its decision to not open the apex court for physical hearings “for the time being” and had assured to meet them again after two weeks to reconsider the issue.
