India’s corona count crosses 1.65 lakh, more than 7,000 cases in 24 hours

 India crossed yet another milestone in Covid-19 cases today as the country reported the highest spike so far with 7,466 new infections in the last 24 hours taking the total cases to 1,65,799.

The death toll rose to 4,706 with 175 deaths reported in a day. While the active cases are 89,987, those cured and migrated add up to 71,105, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

The death toll in India continued to surge. At least 175 deaths were registered on Thursday, the third highest number of deaths in a single day. The number of fatalities due to coronavirus infection climbed to 4,706.

With the biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases, India overtook Turkey to become the ninth worst-affected country by coronavirus pandemic.

The number of active coronavirus patients stood at 89,987. On the brighter side, over 42% of the total coronavirus patients were recovered from the disease.

Late Thursday the country crossed 1.6 lakh coronavirus cases, making it the ninth worst-hit in the world. The surge in cases comes with only two days to the end of the fourth phase of the lockdown.

Data from the Johns Hopkins University in the United States showed that India has become the ninth most affected country by the coronavirus pandemic, crossing Turkey. According to the data, India has also surpassed China in number of deaths; China has reported 4,638 dead as of Friday morning.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Railways to provide “shramik” special trains for migrants as and when state governments ask for one. The court also said stranded migrants should not be asked to pay fares and that they must be give food and water as long as they were on board. The court’s intervention came amid a huge political battle between the centre and a few opposition-ruled states over the plight of migrant labourers left stranded by the lockdown.

The United States recorded 1,297 coronavirus deaths on Thursday, bringing its total to 101,573 since the global pandemic began. The country has also officially logged 1,720,613 cases of the virus, far more than any other nation.
