India voices concern after drone attack incident near Mecca
India has expressed concern over a reported drone attack near Mecca in Saudi Arabia, condemning attacks that could endanger civilians and critical infrastructure.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India was particularly concerned because of Mecca’s significance to Muslims worldwide.
India reiterated its opposition to attacks on Saudi territory and called for an end to actions that threaten civilian lives and essential infrastructure. Jaiswal also expressed hope that peace and stability would return to the region soon.
Saudi authorities said a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels towards Mecca was intercepted and destroyed before it could enter restricted airspace over the holy city on Tuesday evening.
The Houthis have disputed the Saudi version of events and said they do not threaten Mecca. Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said Saudi air defence systems had intercepted the drone south of Mecca. He described the safety of the two holy mosques and pilgrims as a critical security priority.
Saudi Arabia also reportedly issued a security alert in Mecca, said to be the first such warning since an attempted attack on the holy city in 2017. Reports said the alert was withdrawn within minutes.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis and adds to the wider security concerns across West Asia.
