India reports 67,708 new cases and 680 deaths in 24 hours

India has reported 67,708 new Covid-19 cases and 680 deaths in the last 24 hours. Total case tally stands at 73,07,098, including 8,12,390 active cases.

The 689 casualties that India recorded on Wednesday were the lowest since July 27 when 683 deaths were recorded. Just two days ago, India had recorded the second lowest casualties, 696, during the 79-day period. Active cases went down sharply in most states as discharges outstripped fresh infections.

Ushering in a new era of movie watching, the Union government allowed multiplexes, cinema halls and theatres to reopen from Thursday within the framework of a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav has tested positive for coronavirus.

The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 38,729,174. While 29,113,040 have recovered, 1,096,320 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 8,148,928 cases. It is followed by India, which has 7,307,097 cases, Brazil (5,141,498) and Russia (1,340,409). France has declared public health state of emergency over Covid-19.

PVR Cinemas, India’s largest film exhibitor with 845 screens in 176 properties across 71 cities, on Wednesday said 10 states and four union territories have given their go-ahead for the reopening of cinemas.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 244, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (115) and Bhadradri Kothagudem (99) districts, it said in a bulletin, providing data as of 8 pm on October 14.

Punjab Government has decided to reopen schools, however the date of reopening will be announced after the Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) receive approval from the State Health Department, said Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Wednesday.
