India nears 80 lakh Covid-19 cases, 43,893 new infections in 24 hours

A day after recording the lowest number of fresh Covid-19 cases since July 18, India on Tuesday reported  a daily jump of 43,893, even as the tally soared to 7,990,322.

Covid cases in India were just a few thousand short of the 8-million mark even as the number of fresh infections recorded on Tuesday, 42,704, was the second lowest since July 21 when 38,444 patients tested positive.

After recording deaths below 500 for two consecutive days, India recorded 509 fatalities on Tuesday, taking the cumulative toll to 1,20,005.

In its latest unlock guidelines for November, the government said there has been no change in the guidelines. The Ministry of Home Affairs in a statement said the Unlock 5.0 guidelines that last month allowed for reopening of cinemas, theatres and multiplexes with up to 50 percent of their seating capacity will remain in force till November 30.

The order further said that lockdown shall continue to be implemented strictly in the containment zones till November 30, 2020. Earlier, the guidelines for reopening activities issued on September 30 were to be in force till October 31.

A weeklong lockdown came into force in Aizawl municipal area on Tuesday after at least 34 people, including two infants, have tested positive for the disease in Mizoram since Monday, 30 of which were detected in Aizawl.

The Centre said it is focussing on states where cases are growing while the average daily new Covid-19 cases dropped from 83,232 during September 23-29 to 49,909 in the week of October 21-27, health ministry data showed. The decline in cases was witnessed even as average daily testing remained at around 11 lakh samples, officials said.
