Close to Rs 55 crore unaccounted cash was reportedly seized by Income-Tax officials during the raids conducted at various offices of Balaji Group in Chennai.
Reports stated that the raids which began on Friday continued for the second day on Saturday and were held in 40 places including the company’s head office at Habibullah Road in T Nagar and liquor brewing factory.
Quoting sources, reports said the searches were based on a specific input of tax evasion. Cash stockpiles, suspected of being unaccounted money, were seized during the searches that continued on Saturday.
Meanwhile, simultaneous searches were launched on Friday at more than 10 major government Hospitals across Tamil Nadu by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).
They were based on specific inputs of corrupt practices in the labour wards, diagnostic services, mortuary and other departments.
Last week, a check was conducted in the Kancheepuram government hospital, where Rs 45,000 excess cash was seized from the staff deployed in some areas of medical servies, reports said.
In addition to searches at hospitals in districts such as Tiruvallur, Salem, Madurai, Cuddalore and Dindigul, the DVAC sleuths also conducted raids at major government hospitals in Chennai including General Hospital, Royapettah Hospital, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, the Stanley Medical College and Hospital, the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children and the Egmore Children’s Hospital.
