IIT-M launches facility to test 5G networks

IIT Madras’ innovation arm IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation has launched a state-of-the-art lab for testing 5G networks and network security testing labs for domestic and global markets.

Called ComNet Lab, the centre aims to accelerate indigenous 5G secure solution development suitable for the Indian environment.

The lab has been set up for testing 5G Core network functions and 5G RAN functionality that adheres to 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) security and functional requirements and Open RAN standards.

3GPP is an umbrella term for standards organisation that develops mobile telecommunications protocols. The lab infrastructure is owned by IIT Madras Pravartak and operated by networking firm Vaan Megam Networks.

“The ComNet lab will become a 5G core and Open NFV certified assessment body for India and also provide Telecom Security Testing for 5G core security areas in the country. It will also play a role in expanding services to the 4G core area,” said V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.

To be sure, IITM Pravatak is already working with government agencies in standard development, use case development, solution development, vulnerability, and penetration testing in areas of networking and security.
