The CBI has arrested four people, including proprietor of MDM gutkha company A V Madhava Rao, in connection with the multi-crore gutkha scam.
The other arrested people are MDM director Uma Shankar Gupta, food safety and drug administration official Dr P Senthil Murugan and superintendent of central excise department N K Pandian.
Spearheaded by CBI’s anti-corruption wing from Delhi, yesterday’s raids saw the residences of State Health Minister Vijayabaskar at Greenways Road being searched, apart from 35 other places.
DGP T K Rajendran’s house at Mugappair and former city Police Commissioner S George’s residence near Maduravoyal also came under scanner. It is said, the searches at George’s house continued till this morning.
DMK President MK Stalin on Wednesday asked the Tamil Nadu Governor to sack Health and Family Welfare Minister C Vijayabaskar and Director General of Police TK Rajendran if they don’t quit on their own after raids by the CBI.
On Wednesday morning, CBI officials from New Delhi searched several places in Tamil Nadu including the houses of the Health Minister and Rajendran.
The case is related to an Income Tax Department raid on the offices, residences and godowns of a gutkha manufacturer in Tamil Nadu in 2016.
