Gurumurthy’s remarks on OPS create furore, Ministers react, Thuglak Editor clarifies

Editor of Thuglak magazine and RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy has courted controversy by saying that he was the one who sparked the revolt inside the AIADMK, prompting the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu O Panneerselvam to carry out the ‘Dharmayudham’ in 2017.

The video of his speech, while addressing the golden jubilee commemorative event of the magazine, at Tiruchy, had gone viral drawing flak from the ruling AIADMK.

Gurumurthy reportedly said that when all arrangements were on to make VK Sasikala as chief minister he asked Panneerselvam, “Are you a man?” When Panneerselvam asked him what else to do, he told him to go and sit at Jayalalithaa’s samadhi and he will get some idea there.

OPS had sat on dharmayudham’ at the Jaya memorial in 2017, which caused discrepancies in the party and divided it into two factions O Panneerselvam faction and Edappadi K Palaniswami faction.

After the AIADMK began reacting and even as Ministers slammed him for his remarks, the Thuglak editor tweeted his clarification, saying he was “misinterpreted” and that his “statements before and after it were ignored.”

In a series of tweets, he said, “When I spoke to OPS, I did not refer to him specifically or ask him if he was man enough. I only meant why AIADMK members were bereft of courage and falling at Sasikala’s feet. OPS also knows this and it is he who saved AIADMK from Sasikala. I have great respect for him.”

He said, “I have already said this in an interview. Rangaraj Pandey, (former journalist), who spoke before, asked if it was right of Thuglak, which accepted Jayalalithaa, to oppose Sasikala, who was endorsed by the former. This is the reason I said that at the Thuglak meeting. When I was replying, I spoke about meeting OPS and how he saved the AIADMK.”

Gurumurthy also explained that while speaking to Panneerselvam years ago, he had wondered why AIADMK functionaries were kneeling before Sasikala without courage and that he did not insult Panneerselvam.  “Panneerselvam knows this well,” he added.
