Govt defends LPG price revision, says cooking gas in India remains among world’s most affordable

The Union government has defended the latest increase in domestic LPG prices, maintaining that cooking gas in India continues to be available at comparatively lower rates than in many other countries despite a sharp rise in international fuel costs.

The clarification came after the price of a standard LPG cylinder was raised recently.  Responding to criticism over the hike, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said global benchmark LPG prices have risen significantly this year, driven by supply uncertainties and geopolitical developments affecting energy markets. According to the ministry, international LPG prices have increased substantially since the beginning of the year, placing pressure on domestic fuel retailers.

Despite these global trends, the government argued that Indian consumers continue to pay less for cooking gas than households in many other countries. Officials said the increase passed on to consumers represents only a portion of the rise in international costs, with oil marketing companies absorbing part of the burden.

The ministry also pointed to the continuation of targeted support measures for eligible beneficiaries under welfare schemes, stating that assistance remains available for economically vulnerable households to help reduce the impact of fuel price fluctuations.

Government officials further noted that India remains heavily dependent on LPG imports to meet domestic demand, making local prices sensitive to developments in global energy markets. Recent disruptions in major fuel-producing regions have contributed to volatility in international prices and increased procurement costs.

Meanwhile, opposition parties and consumer groups have criticised the latest revision, arguing that repeated increases in cooking gas prices add to the financial strain on households already dealing with rising living expenses.

The government, however, maintained that balancing consumer interests with the financial viability of fuel retailers remains necessary, especially during periods of elevated global energy prices. Officials said pricing decisions would continue to be reviewed in line with international market conditions and domestic supply considerations.
