“Garudan” Movie Review
“Garudan” is a film compelling about the limits and demands of loyalty.
Aadhi (Sasikumar) and Karuna (Unni Mukundan) have been inseparable friends since childhood. Their bond extends to Sokkan (Soori), an orphan who becomes a loyal member of Karuna’s household. Though Karuna’s family once held the prestigious title of Zamindars, their wealth has dissipated over time. To maintain appearances, Karuna now operates a brick kiln. The friends reside in the quaint village of Kombai, notable for its famous temple. Due to the family’s storied history, Karuna’s grandmother (Vadivukkarasi) leads the temple committee. Their lives are harmonious, rooted in mutual support and friendship.
The tranquility is disrupted when Thangapandi (RV Udhayakumar), a corrupt politician, discovers a valuable piece of land belonging to the Kombai temple. With a history of land grabbing, Thangapandi sets his sights on this prime property. The official documents affirming the temple’s ownership are well-guarded, except for one ancient manuscript held by the temple committee. To secure the land, Thangapandi enlists his ruthless relative, Nagaraj (Mime Gopi), to steal this crucial document. The ensuing struggle forms the crux of “Garudan,” an action-packed drama.
Director Durai Senthilkumar delivers a fresh, twist-filled narrative, steering clear of cliched hero glorification. Each character in “Garudan” has their moment to shine, contributing significantly to the story’s progression. Initially, Unni Mukundan’s character stands out by offering shelter to Soori’s Sokkan. As the plot unfolds, Sasikumar’s Aadhi gains prominence, followed by pivotal moments for Sshivada’s character. Vadivukkarasi also re-emerges, adding depth to the storyline, while Soori’s Sokkan captivates the climax.
The film boasts an exceptional cast, each actor impeccably matched to their role. Soori, in particular, excels as Sokkan, delivering a memorable performance both in dialogue and action sequences. Sasikumar’s portrayal of the upright Aadhi, alongside Sshivada’s endearing performance as his wife, resonates deeply. Unni Mukundan as Karuna, supported by Roshini Haripriyan, R.V. Udhayakumar, and Mime Gopi, enhances the film’s impact. Noteworthy contributions from Vadivukkarasi and George Maryan, who brings humor to the film, further enrich the narrative. Revathi Sharma also impresses as Sokkan’s romantic interest.
Technically, the film excels across the board. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score stands out, elevating the emotional depth of the scenes. Mahesh Mathew’s stunt choreography, especially in the climax, is praiseworthy. Arthur Wilson’s cinematography and Pradeep Raghav’s editing are top-notch, enhancing the film’s visual and narrative appeal.
“Garudan” is a compelling film that entertains while provoking thought about the limits and demands of loyalty. With its gripping plot, stellar performances, and outstanding technical contributions, it is a must-watch that promises to be worth your time and investment.
