Ganja chocolates: Public ransack petty shop, A group of people on Thursday ransacked a petty shop at Tondiarpet in the city, for allegedly selling chocolates laced with sedatives to school children.
Chennai police and Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Control authorities here have launched an investigation into sale of suspected ganja chocolates to school kids in R. K Nagar here.
The raids followed the hospitalisation of a 13-year-old boy after he consumed ganja-laced chocolate sold in a shop inNorth Chennai.
Following this, raids were conducted in several shops near schools and educational institutions in the city and a total of 17 people were arrested for selling narcotic substancesand gutkha items.
Police arrested Suresh Mahola under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 for preserving and selling a narcotic substance at his shop at Durga Devi Nagar, Tondiarpet.
The native of Bihar told police he sourced the chocolates from a wholesale vendor in Kolkata, paying 40 for a pack of 40, and sold them for 15 each. His relatives replenished the stock whenever they visited Chennai, he said.
