The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a huge quantity of chocolates having drugs was seized from a godown in Chennai and asked the district collector to submit a report within four weeks.
In the last two weeks, Tamil Nadu police have unearthed the sales of chocolates containing banned drugs, including ganja, across the State, and have arrested more than 500 people.
The police took action after a ninth standard student in Chennai fell ill after consuming chocolate bought from a shop in the RK Nagar area in Chennai.
“A few days ago, a schoolboy had to be admitted to a hospital after consuming drug chocolates which he purchased from a shop in RK Nagar in Chennai.
The commission has issued notices to the district collector, Chennai to inform the commission about the steps being taken to deal with the situation,” said a NHRC statement on Thursday.
The commission observed that the menace was a serious threat to the life and safety of the younger generation, mainly the students and teenagers, who can be easily lured by the anti-social elements.
