Gangster killed in encounter in Chennai

A gangster was gunned down by the Villupuram police in Chennai on Tuesday night in an encounter. Manikandan faced 28 cases including eight murder charges against him.

Manikandan alias ‘Dhada’ Manikandan, 39, of Kuilapalayam, Vanur Taluk in Villupuram district was involved in 28 cases, including 13 murder cases and an attempt to murder case and robbery.

He had been staying in Anna Nagar West Extension here for the last 20 days with his wife and two children. Based on a tip-off they got about his whereabouts, a police team from Auroville police station in Villupuram district came to Chennai to nab Manikandan.

The special team attached to the Superintendent of Police, Villupuram, rounded him up at an apartment called ‘Golden Oak’ on Fourth Street of B Block, Anna Nagar Extension.

“Our team wanted to arrest him and produce him before a court, but he attacked a policeman. Due to unavoidable circumstances, one of our sub-inspectors opened fire,” SP Jayakumar said.

The injured SI was admitted to the Kilpauk government medical college and hospital for treatment. Manikandan was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. His body was sent to post mortem.

Manikandan, (39), a native of Kuilappalayam village in Villupuram district,  had several cases against him in Villupuram district police stations especially in Auroville township station.
