Cyclone Gaja intensified into a severe cyclonic storm Thursday, the latest bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
As Met department said it will gust up to 100 Kmph, it can very well be considered as Category One cyclone which can cause heavy rains, floods, mudslides, uprooting trees and damage to public infrastructure at the areas of its landfall.
But thankfully, Chennai won’t get affected from the cyclone but still receive moderate rainfall. The cyclonic storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal lay centered about 320 km southeast from Chennai and 300 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam of Tamil Nadu as of 8:30 am on Thursday and was moving further west-southwestwards with a speed of 17kmph, the bulletin added.
Cyclone Gaja centred over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Cuddalore on Thursday night.
The India Meteorological Department said in its bulletin: “The Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved further west-southwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of 14th November, 2018 over Southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 83.8°E, about 410 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 450 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu).”
It added: “It is very likely to move west-southwestwards and intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. While moving west-southwestwards thereafter, it is likely to weaken and cross Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Cuddalore, around Nagapattinam during 15th November evening as a Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.”
Tamil Nadu government has appealed to private employers in the coastal districts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram to permit their employees to leave early so that they can reach their homes safe before 4 pm.
I wake of the cyclone Southern Railways has cancelled train numbers 16176 and 16186 between Chennai Egmore and Karaikal / Venlankanni today. Train number 16180 between Chennai Egmore and Mannargudi has also been cancelled today. Anna University has postponed all exams today to 22 November. In the last 24 hours, Nagercoil recorded a maximum rainfall of 3 cm followed by Ayikudi which recorded 2 cm. Pechiparai, Thenkasi and Madavaram recorded 1 cm each.
