Tamil Maanila Congress president and former union minister G K Vasan has urged the Centre to intervene in the Cauvery issue as the Karnataka government continues to defy the Supreme Court order on release of water and save the farmers in the delta regions.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Vasan said ryots in the Cauvery delta regions in Tamilnadu were worried as they the Samba crops were withering away due to non-availability of water and added that the Central government should impress upon the Congress-led government in Karnataka to abide by the Supreme Court order on the issue and ensure release of water.
He urged the State government to take necessary steps to control the spread of fever, dengue and malaria, ahead of the monsoon season.
In a statement to the media, Vasan referred to the deaths of children in Tiruvallur district and Chennai over the last two months and urged the State government officials to take immediate steps for proper clearance of garbage and ensure cleanliness.
He also urged the authorities to take stringent action as per law against the persons who were responsible for the death of three students near Guindy.
Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, Vasan said the State government should give appropriate compensation to the families and give necessary medical care to the injured.
He also said that the Central and State governments should take steps to waive off educational loans obtained by people, who had not been able to secure jobs after graduation.
