G K Vasan meets Modi, Ponnar meets Rajini

Amid speculations over the post of Tamil Nadu BJP president which is lying vacant, two important meetings took place on Wednesday. While Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Vasan called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan met superstar Rajinikanth in Chennai.

Vasan on Wednesday had a one-to-one meeting with Modi at New Delhi and later rubbished rumours that he was planning to merge his party with the BJP as false information. However, Vasan said he would be meeting BJP president Amit Shah in the coming weeks.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the PM, he said, “TMC will continue to function with its own identity. Our immediate target is local body elections and the next aim is to start our account in the State Assembly. The speculations about the merger of TMC with BJP are nothing but canards and false propaganda. I wish to put a full stop to this false information.”

He added: “It was a one-to-one meeting that lasted for 20 minutes. I have also shared my views about the prevailing political scenario in Tamil Nadu and my assessment about it. If any news is spread beyond this, that will be mere speculation.”

According to Vasan, “TMC is well respected and liked in Tamil Nadu. We will continue as we are and are going to take part in the local body polls in alliance with the AIADMK.”

When asked for details on the discussion with the Prime Minister he said, “It was a courtesy visit. I explained to him about developmental issues in Tamil Nadu in the fields of education, agriculture, jobs and the Tamil language. He listened patiently and asked doubts as well.

Meanwhile, sources said Pon Radhakrishnan called on Rajinikanth at the latter’s Poes Garden residence in Chennai to personally greet him for the special Icon of Golden Jubilee award, which is to be presented to the superstar at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakjash Javadekar tweeted, “In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, during the past several decades, I am happy to announce that the award for the ICON OF GOLDEN JUBILEE OF #IFFI2019 is being conferred on cine star Shri S Rajnikant”. At the 45th edition of IFFI in 2014, he was conferred with the ‘Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year’.
