Friends film fraternity fondly remembers Pratap Pothen

Renowned actor-director Pratap Pothen passed away on Friday, July 15, in Chennai.

He was 70 years old. According to reports, he was found dead at his house in Chennai. The actor is survived by his daughter, Keya Pothen.

Pothen’s death caused a wave of mourning in the film industry and on social media. Filmmaker Mani Ratnam and industry stalwarts like cinematographers Rajeev Menon and PC Sriram were the first to reach his home and pay tribute to him.

Social media users remembered him as an actor in films such as Moodu Pani, Varumayin Niram Sigappu, Nenjathai Kilathe, Panneer Pushpangal and Azhiyatha Kolangal, and as a filmmaker in Vetri Vizha, Ritubedham and Seevalperi Paandi.

Pratap Pothen was born on August 13, 1952. In 1985, he married Radikaa Sarathkumar. The two parted ways 1 year later. Then, he got married to Amala Satyanath Pothen, who passed away in 2012. The two are parents to Keya.

In his long career, Pratap acted in over 100 films in multiple languages. Apart from being an actor, he also wrote scripts for films, directed and produced many noteworthy movies.

He made his debut as an actor with director Bharathan’s Aaravam, which was released in 1978. The actor won awards for his performances in Thakara, Meendum Oru Kadhal kadhai, 22 Female Kottayam and Chamaram, among other films. Rithubhehedam, Oru Yathramozhi, Chaitanya and Daisy are some of the films he directed.
