Four fishermen from Thanjavur district were arrested by the Lanka Navy

The Sri Lankan Navy apprehended four fishermen from Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu and confiscated their mechanized fishing trawler allegedly for unlawful poaching in its territorial waters on Wednesday night.

Tamil Nadu fisheries officials, quoting a communiqué received from Sri Lanka, said here tonight that the fishermen were arrested when they were reportedly fishing on high seas off the Kovilan Lighthouse in the Jaffna peninsula.

The arrested fishermen and their trawler were taken to Kankesanthurai harbor and handed over to the Sri Lankan fisheries officials at Mailadi for onward legal proceedings.

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 345 fishermen hailing from Rameswaram, Thoothukudi, Nagapattinam, and Pudukottai districts in Tamil Nadu and seized a total of 47 fishing trawlers on the alleged charges of poaching in the Island nation’s territorial waters, so far this year.
