Former top police officials step down from key Tamil Nadu posts

Several senior retired police officers holding important positions in Tamil Nadu’s administrative bodies have tendered their resignations.

Former Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal, a 1990-batch IPS officer, stepped down as Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Fire Services Commission on June 17, 2026. Along with him, commission members Vikraman, Sathyamurthy and Namachivayam also submitted their resignations.

In another significant development, former DGP Sunil Kumar, a 1988-batch IPS officer, resigned from his position as Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB).

Both Jiwal and Sunil Kumar had been appointed to these posts during the tenure of the previous DMK-led government.

The exits have attracted attention, particularly because the Fire Services Commission was formed only last year. The state government established the body in September 2025 with the objective of enhancing governance, improving operational standards and recommending reforms within the Fire and Rescue Services Department.

As of now, neither the officers nor the government have publicly stated the reasons behind the resignations. The unexpected departures have sparked interest in administrative and political circles
