Filing of nominations starts for Tamil Nadu civic polls

Filing of nominations for local body elections in nine newly-created districts of Tamil Nadu which would be held in two phases on October 6 and 9 has commenced today.

Candidates can file nominations till September 22. Counting will take place on October 12.

Elections are being held to 27,003 seats in Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts.

A total of 27,003 posts are to be filled — 140 district panchayat ward members, 1,381 panchayat union ward members for 74 panchayat unions and 22,581 village panchayat ward members posts in 2,901 village panchayats.

A total of 76,59,720 voters would exercise their franchise in the two-phase polls. Each voter would cast four votes to elect the district panchayat ward councillors, panchayat union councillors, village panchayat president and village panchayat ward councillors. Ballot paper would be used.
