Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, DMK working president M K Stalin and other leaders today paid respects to the ashes of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which were kept at BJP state headquarters Kamalalayam in Chennai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders handed urns with Vajpayee’s ashes to party presidents from across the country, including BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan, at a function in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Party chief Amit Shah, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as well as members of Vajpayee’s family were present at the event held in the BJP national headquarters.
The Asthi Kalash of Bharat Ratna Vajpayee were brought in Chennai on Wednesday evening for simultaneous immersion on August 26 at six locations in Tamil Nadu, including Marina, Rameswaram and river Cauvery.
From the airport, the urn was brought to the BJP office in a procession. Tamilisai said the ashes would be kept ‘Kamalalayam’ till today evening to enable political party leaders and the public to pay their homage after which it would be taken in a procession to various parts of the State for immersion on August 26.
The ‘Atal Kalash Yatra’, would be organised by the BJP state and district units, and it would travel across the state before immersion. The BJP would
also be organising ‘Shradhanjalis’ during the Yatra.
