Dramatic rise of 18,500 new cases in India in 24 hours, 2.9 lakh cured so far

Coronavirus cases in the country have breached the 5 lakh-mark after India registered 18,552 new cases in the last 24 hours. The new cases have crossed the previous record of 17,296 that was registered on Friday. The total number of people in India who tested positive for coronavirus has reached 5,08,953.

The current total includes 1,97,387 active cases. 2,95,881 Covid-19 cases have been cured or discharged from the hospital. The total recovery now stands at 58.13%. The death tally has also increased to 15,685.

As many as 2,95,881 people have been cured/discharged/migrated, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a latest update on Saturday. The death toll stands at 15,685.

The national capital Delhi is now emerging asa hotspot overtaking Mumbai with over 77,000 thousand coronavirus cases. The death toll in the city now stands at 2,492. States like Assam and West Bengal have also been reporting big surge in cases on a daily basis.

A stringent 14-day lockdown has been announced in Guwahati by the Assam government after nearly 700 people were tested positive since June 15. They had no travel history which alarmed the authorities, reports said. Assam has a total of 6,600 COVID-19 cases out of of over 2,600 are active ones.

Tamil Nadu recorded its biggest COVID-19 spike on Friday, with 3,645 new cases and 46 deaths. This took the state’s tally to 74,622 while the toll surged to 957.

Chennai alone recorded 1,956 cases — its highest single-day spike — increasing its tally to 49,690. There were also 37 deaths in the city taking its toll to 730. Among the new cases, 122 were people who arrived from outside the state, according to the media bulletin issued by the Directorate of Public Health.
