DMK legislator J Anbazhagan, who was suffering from Covid-19, passed away at a private hospital at Chrompet in Chennai this morning.
Top leaders of Tamil Nadu have condoled his demise. Earlier in the day, as his health condition worsened, DMK president M K Stalin and senior leaders visited the hospital and discussed with the doctors team which was providing teatement to Anbazhagan.
Earlier, his health condition had deteriorated, said a medical bulletin issued by the hospital. “Since Monday evening, there has been a significant deterioration of his condition.
His oxygen requirement has gone up once again, and his cardiac function also is deteriorating requiring medicine support for blood pressure. His existing chronic kidney disease is also worsening. His condition is described as critical,” said hospital’s chief executive officer Dr Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy.
On Tuesday last, Anbazhagan, who is among the party district secretaries in the state capital and a senior functionary, complained of severe acute respiratory distress and tested positive for coronavirus on admission.
Initially, he was managed with high flow oxygen therapy through face mask and he was put on ventilator support on June 3 as his respiratory distress worsened, the hospital said.
At a time when he was being gradually weaned off from the ventilator, his condition deteriorated, it said.
It was said the Chepauk MLA had been getting 90% oxygen on ventilator which had improved steadily over the past two days to 40%. He was being weaned off gradually from the ventilator, but the situation became critical on Monday evening.
Son of former DMK MLA Jayaraman, Anbazhagan was elected to the State Assembly from Chepauk constituency in the 2016 elections. Earlier, he was first elected to the Assembly from the T.Nagar seat in the 2001 elections and later from Chepauk in 2011 and 2016.
