DMK MLA arrested over alleged threat against Chief Minister Vijay
Vilathikulam MLA G.V. Markandeyan of the DMK was arrested by the Thoothukudi District Crime Branch on Monday in connection with an alleged threat made against Chief Minister Joseph Vijay during a thanksgiving meeting held in Kovilpatti on Saturday.
According to police, the action followed a complaint filed by P. Kasiraman, the North East district joint secretary of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The complaint alleged that the legislator made threatening and controversial remarks against the Chief Minister, including a statement that his “bones would be broken” inside the Legislative Assembly.
Based on the complaint, the District Crime Branch registered a case under Sections 351(3), 352 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A police team reached Markandeyan’s residence early on Monday to execute the arrest. DMK supporters gathered at the spot and protested against the police action. Despite the resistance, officers led by District Crime Branch Inspector P. Janaki took the MLA into custody and brought him to the Superintendent of Police’s office for questioning. Further investigation is underway.
