A DMK functionary attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation near the party district headquarters in Coimbatore on Sunday, for denying him ticket to contest the coming local body polls, even as 50 party workers staged a protest by covering their mouths with black clothes.
Murugesan R, party’s ward 21 secretary, attempted to set himself ablaze in protest against the nomination of M Ravichandran as the party’s councillor candidate.
Murugesan visited the DMK office while a group of party members from ward 53 were protesting against the nomination of Santhamani R as the councillor candidate.
The 39-year-old man was spotted with a bottle of kerosene. He later poured kerosene on himself. Before he could set himself ablaze, he was stopped by police. Police seized the kerosene bottle and a matchbox from him.
Even as the list of candidates were released two days ago, there was resentment among the party workers in some of the wards.
Senior party leaders are discussing the matter with them, they said.
Similarly, a woman, Kalaivani had also attempted self-immolation on Saturday near the party office for denying ticket to party division secretary Muthalagan in 21st ward.
