DMK leader dies of Covid-19, MLA tests positive

L Balaraman, the former secretary of the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s north Chennai unit, due to COVID-19. This has sent shock waves in party circles, as the party’s MLA J Anbazhagan died of coronavirus only recently.

DMK president M K Stalin condoled the death of Balaraman and said Balaraman was a hard worker and played a key role in ensuring the victory of former DMK president M Karunanidhi and former secretary K Anbazhagan in the Harbour Assembly constituency.

Stalin also pointed out that Balaraman had special affection for Karunanidhi and said his sacrifices and contribution could never be forgotten and extended his condolences to the family members.

Meanwhile, Vasantham K Karthikeyan, the DMK MLA from Rishivandhiyam, tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday. He is the second legislator from the DMK and third in the state to contract the infection.

Karthikeyan and his mother tested positive on Sunday. Health officials in Coimbatore said that the MLA, his mother, wife and daughter had been admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment.

According to the state government, a total of 31,401 samples were tested on Sunday. Nearly 9 lakh samples have been tested for the virus lakh till date.

On Saturday, the state tested 33,231 samples, which is the highest number of Covid-19 tests conducted in a single day in Tamil Nadu.
