DMK invites Rajini, Kamal for Karunanidhi statue unveiling

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has invited superstar Rajinikanth and Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan for the unveiling of a statue of its late president M Karunanidhi.

The statue of Karunanidhi will be unveiled by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the premises of DMK’s mouthpiece Murasoli office in the city on August 7.

The statue is being unveiled to mark the first death anniversary of Karunanidhi, who passed away at a private hospital in Chennai in August last year.

In December 2018, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Karunanidhi at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Chennai.

The eight-foot statue was installed beside the statue of DMK founder C N Annadurai on the premises. DMK president M K Stalin welcomed the leaders on the dais.

After the function, the leaders paid their respects at Karunanidhi’s mausoleum at the Marina. Speaking at the unveiling of the statue, Stalin proposed Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate, saying he has got the “ability to defeat the fascist Modi government”.

Alleging that under PM Modi’s rule, “the country has gone 15 years back”, he said, “If we give another chance to him, surely the country will go 50 years back. PM Modi is behaving like a king, that’s why we’ve all come together to safeguard democracy and country”.
