K Anbazhagan, DMK’s general secretary for 43 years, four-time Minister and a close friend of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, died in the wee hours of March 7.
Anbazhagan was appointed to the party general secretary post in 1977. He was admitted to Apollo Hospitals due to age related ailments on Feb 24 and his condition turned critical later.
He was called Peraasiriyar (professor) as he worked as a lecturer at the Pachayappa college from 1944 to 1957. He later resigned and contested elections.
“DMK condoles the demise of general secretary K Anbazhagan. DMK postpones all its party functions for 1 week and all DMK flags to fly half-mast for a week,” the statement read.
He was born as Ramaiah in Kattoor near Thiruvarur in Tanjore district(now Thiruvarur District)on 19 December 1922 and secured an M.A (Tamil) degree from Annamalai University.
He was a friend and advisor to Karunanidhi and an architect of the DMK’s path in Tamil Nadu, Anbazhagan’s passion for the self-respect movement and eloquence on stage had made him a close confidante of DMK founder CN Annadurai.
Anbazhagan, who was elected to the State Assembly nine times and had served as the Finance Minister and Leader of the House during the DMK regime, breathed his last at around 0100 hrs. He was 97. His wife predeceased him in December 2012 at the age of 90.
