DMK functionary arrested for kicking woman, Stalin talks tough

The police on Thursday arrested S Selvakumar, a DMK party functionary in Perambulur district, for kicking a woman running a beauty parlour.

Meanwhile, DMK suspended Selvakumar for physically assaulting the woman in May. The suspension was announced through a press release on Thursday, which said, “The party suspends him from basic membership and all party posts due to actions that go beyond the code of conduct of the party and for defaming the party.”

In a statement, DMK president M K Stalin said party members should not violate rules and law and they should safeguard the principles of the DMK, failing which action would taken against them.

The incident took place on 25 May, 2018 — although the video only came to light on Thursday — and the politician has since been arrested by the police and suspended from primary membership of the party. However, social media users are now demanding stricter action against the corporator.

According to the police, the incident happened in May at the Mayuri Beauty Parlour in Perambalur Old Bus Stand. Sathya, who owns the parlour, allegedly had financial dealings with Selvakumar, who ran a furniture shop in Perambalur.

In the video, Selvakumar can be seen repeatedly kicking a woman, in the presence of three other women in the parlour. The other women try to stop him but he shrugs them off and continues hitting the woman.
