DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan today announced that an emergency executive committee meeting of the party will be held on 14 August at 10 am.
In a statement, he said the meeting will be headed by the party’s working president M K Stalin and asked all the executive members to participate in it without fail.
The meeting’s agenda is to condole the death of Karunanidhi, Anbazhagan said. A similar meeting was held when party founder and Chief Minister C N Annadurai passed away in 1969, a party leader said.
“A condolence resolution will be adopted and other than that, there is nothing on the agenda now… a date for holding the general council meet may be considered and announced,” he added.
There is speculation that Karunanidhi’s younger son MK Stalin will be elevated to the post of the party President from his present title of working President.
“The Executive Committee has no role in the process (of elevation). The existing rules permit Stalin to continue as the working President. The post of working President is to function during the absence of the President. The Executive Committee cannot ratify or appoint him as President. Only the General Council can elect posts such as President, General Secretary and Treasurer,” said TKS Elangovan.
Stalin, who was groomed as political legal heir apparent, was the automatic choice and was indicated y the 94-year-old DMK Chief himself, when he once said he would propose his name, if he get a chance, for the post of party Chief.
