AIADMK nominees P Dhanapal and Pollachi V Jayaraman were elected unopposed as speaker and deputy speaker of the 15th Tamil Nadu legislative assembly today , when the House met to hold elections for the key posts.
They were greeted by chief minister O Panneerselvam, leader of opposition M K Stalin and leader of the House O Panneerselvam and others,
Dhanapal was the speaker in the previous assembly and Jayaraman was his deputy. The two leaders, accompanied by several AIADMK ministers, filed their nomination papers with assembly Secretary A M P Jamaludeen on Thursday morning.

It may be noted that Dhanapal and Jayaraman were also the Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the later part of the 14th State Legislative Assembly. Dhanapal became the first Dalit to occupy the Speaker post when he was sworn-in in 2012.
AIADMK, which won the May 16 Assembly elections for a consecutive term, has 133 MLAs in the 234-member house with three vacancies and it can ensure election of its nominees for the key posts.
After the session concludes, the assembly is likely to be adjourned for a week till the Governor’s address and the Budget session will commence later.
