Deputy CM Udhayanidhi inaugurates upgraded Blue Flag Marina beach
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the newly upgraded Marina Beach facilities on Sunday.
The project, a major step towards achieving the prestigious “Blue Flag” certification for the iconic beach, aims to transform the area into a world-class, inclusive, and eco-friendly recreational space.
The revamp, costing approximately ₹7.31 crore and spanning a 20-acre area, was carried out under the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources and Blue Economy (TN-SHORE) program.
The new infrastructure includes a host of amenities designed for all visitors, including those with disabilities. The beach now features special play equipment like flat slides and rotor swings for special children, along with 12 dedicated wheelchairs.
Other additions include bamboo shade umbrellas, reclining chairs, seating benches, and selfie points, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and visitor comfort.
The project also prioritizes public safety and cleanliness with the installation of four watchtowers, 24 dustbins, CCTV surveillance, and a first-aid center.
A key focus of the upgrade is to meet the stringent standards of the Blue Flag certification, an international eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in Denmark.
The certification process, which can take up to three months, is a testament to the city’s commitment to water quality, environmental management, safety, and accessibility.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is confident that the new facilities meet the necessary requirements. This development follows the successful certification of Kovalam beach and is part of the state government’s broader plan to upgrade more beaches in districts like Cuddalore and Thoothukudi.
