Deepavali rush: Chennai police roll out massive security measures
With Deepavali celebrations approaching on November 8, Greater Chennai Police have stepped up security across major shopping districts to protect the large crowds expected to visit the city’s commercial centres.
Police Commissioner A Amalraj has instructed personnel to prioritise crowd management, crime prevention and traffic regulation. Officers from various city police units, the Armed Reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police and Home Guards have been mobilised for the festive deployment.
Special arrangements are in place at T Nagar, Washermenpet, Purasawalkam and Flower Bazaar, which are expected to witness heavy shopping activity.
A total of 25 temporary watchtowers have been installed across key locations. T Nagar has 10 towers, while Washermenpet, Kilpauk and Flower Bazaar have four each. Triplicane has two towers and Adyar has one. Personnel equipped with binoculars will monitor crowds in shifts.
The police have also established 12 temporary control rooms and 37 help desks in the major shopping areas. CCTV footage will be monitored to identify suspicious activity and track known offenders. Arrangements have been made to assist children who get separated from their families. Around 100 officers wearing body cameras will be deployed to monitor public movement.
LED screens will display safety messages and crime-prevention advisories. Public announcements through 66 speaker systems will warn shoppers about pickpocketing, theft and traffic congestion, while offering tips to safeguard mobile phones, cash, jewellery and other valuables.
Seven drones will provide aerial surveillance of crowded areas. Police have also formed a dedicated WhatsApp group to share intelligence and coordinate action against criminal activity.
Patrolling by cars and motorcycles has been intensified, while traffic marshals have been deployed in T Nagar, Purasawalkam, Washermenpet and Flower Bazaar to manage congestion. Mobile X-ray baggage scanner vehicles will conduct random checks at shopping centres, malls and other crowded locations.
Women shoppers have been advised to take precautions against chain snatching, including covering their jewellery with scarves. Plainclothes police personnel, including women officers, will be stationed in busy areas to identify and prevent crimes.
Emergency preparedness has also been strengthened, with 108 ambulance services, medical teams and fire engines positioned to respond to emergencies. Additional safety precautions have been implemented around firecracker shops.
