Day 2: Modi cleans beach, welcomes Xi in Tamil, discusses key issues

On Day 2 of the informal meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mamallapuram today, the former welcomed the latter in Tamil.

“Madhippirkuriya virundhinarai varaverkiren,” Modi said. The two leaders startedthe second day of their informal summit with a tete-e-tete in the coastal temple town this morning.

Modi and Xi exchanged views facing the sea front in the luxury Taj resort Fisherman’s Cove. The one-on-one was followed by delegation-level talks at the Tango hall.

Earlier in the day, Modi cleaned the shores of Mamallapuram beach by picking up plastic wastes littered on the beach, spreading out the message of keeping public places clean and tidy.

Modi had a morning walk along the shores, barefooted for about 30 minutes. Uploading a video of his walk and collecting waste in his twitter handle, Modi said, “Plogging at a beach in Mamallapuram this
morning. It lasted for over 30 minutes.”

“Let us ensure our public places are clean and tidy! Let us also ensure we remain fit and healthy,” he tweeted.  Plogging means picking up trash such as used plastic bottles while jogging or running.

In another tweet, Modi said: ”Refreshing walk and exercises in Mamallapuram, along the scenic coast.” “Also handed over my ‘collection’ to Jeyaraj, who is a part of the hotel staff”, he added. “Let us ensure our public places are clean and tidy!” he also said.
