Covid-19 cases increase in Chennai, experts fear more infections

Chennai continues to report more than 1,000 cases for the past few days and experts fear the numbers would increase in the coming days due to more people coming to the city after the e-pass restrictions were eased and opening of TASMAC shops.

Tamil Nadu reported 5,709 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the tally to 3,49,654. The state reported 121 deaths, and the toll reached 6007.

The northern districts reported 3,122 cases and 61 deaths, including 2,264 cases and 43 deaths in the Chennai region. Chennai reported 1,182 cases and 24 deaths, while its neighbours Tiruvallur (489), Chengalpet (344) and Kancheepuram (249) together logged 1,082 cases and 19 deaths.

According to the State Health Department 65,075 people were tested, while 5,850 patients were discharged.

The state reported 121 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll in the state to over 6,000, of which 2,500 are from Chennai.

Over 1 lakh e-passes were issued to individuals on Monday, after the Tamil Nadu government relaxed restrictions on e-passes for inter-district and inter-state travel. As per the relaxations, individuals can now receive their e-pass within 24 hours of appying.

The eight districts in the west reported 854 cases and 17 deaths. Coimbatore reported 392 cases and Salem had 286 cases, while Dharmapuri and the Nilgiris added eight and nine fresh cases respectively.
