Coronavirus: Primary schools shut in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that pre-KG, LKG and UKG classes in all schools across the state will remain shut from March 16 to 31 to prevent spread of novel coronavirus.

In seven districts — Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Kanniyakumari, Theni, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi — that border Kerala, holiday has been declared for students from KG to 5th standard will be closed.

The government issued a notification late on Friday asking schools to follow the instructions. The classes will be closed till March 31. The leave will be applicable to play schools too.

Meanwhile, many other states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and many more announced to close schools, colleges, and other educational institutes to prevent the transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Karnataka and Kerala, the neighbouring states to Tamil Nadu, are majorly hit by the COVID-19 with around 10 cases each. Therefore, it is a huge challenge for the Tamil Nadu government to follow the necessary steps to prevent transmission through inter-state borders.

The number of confirmed cases of a novel coronavirus in the country has risen to 81, with the country reporting its first COVID-19 death in Karnataka. Samples of the 76-year-old man from Kalaburgi, who died on March 10 tested positive for COVID-19.
