A surgeon died and as many as 105 persons tested positive on Sunday, taking the total number of positive cases to 1,477 and the number of deaths in Tamil Nadu to 16.
The neurosurgeon was admitted to a private hospital. His daughter, who was also admitted to the hospital, is stable. Tamil Nadu reported 105 fresh cases of the novel Coronavirus on Sunday taking the total number of positive cases in the State to 1477 with 15 deaths.
This comes after the State had been witnessing a drop in the number of cases this week. According to the media bulletin released on Sunday, 46 people were discharged on Sunday and the number of active cases in the State stands at 1,048.
It is said that aggressive testing thanks to the arrival of rapid test kits was the reason behind the sudden hike in cases. A cluster of 50 persons from Chennai tested positive for the COVID-19 infection. Of this, 10 were from primary sources, or people who had tested positive already, and 40 others were those who had been in contact with them.
In Chengalpattu, three persons, all of whom had come into contact with positive persons, were diagnosed positive. Five from Coimbatore, and six from Cuddalore, contacts of positive persons, tested positive.
In a first, two Chennai-based journalists and one police personnel were confirmed to have contracted the infection. Three doctors also tested positive in the city, health department officials said on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the government had issued a statement that the Tamil Nadu government is expected to take a decision on easing curbs on specified industries in the state after the expert committee that was constituted, submits its report on Monday.
