Corona cases in TN crosses 8,000 mark, Chennai sees record increase

The number of novel coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu breached 8,000-mark, after 798 Covid-19 positive patients were reported in the state in the last 24 hours. This is the highest single-day spike witnessed in the state yet.

Chennai, the capital city of Tamilnadu, retained the dubious distinction of corona capital as well, by reporting 538 cases Monday alone. The total number of cases in the metropolis now stands at 3,833.

While Chengalpattu reported 90 cases, Ariyalur reported 33, Thiruvallur 97, Thiruvannamalai 3, Ramanathapuram 4, Thanjavur 3, Dharmapuri 2, Kancheepuram 8 and Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Perambalur and Vellore 1 each.

Monday was the fifth day in a row when Tamil Nadu registered positive cases in excess of 500 as it reels from a second surge in Coronavirus spread, placing pressure on the state’s healthcare response and ability to keep pace with the Centre’s plan of lockdown exit.

The rise in infections was largely pushed by the jump in cases in Chennai, which recorded 538 cases in the last 24 hours, the biggest daily spike for the second in a row. The city had registered 509 cases on Sunday.

Currently, there are 5,895 active patients while 2,051 patients have recovered from the highly contagious disease. Out of these cured patients, 92 were treated successfully today.

Of the total number of confirmed cases, 5,421 are males, 2,579 are females and two are transgender patients, the data stated.
