Cops book Karunas, but actor-MLA says he is very much at home

The Chennai police booked a criminal case against MLA and actor Karunas for issuing a death threat to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and a police officer.

The legislator, who got elected from the Tiruvadanai Assembly constituency in 2016 with the support of AIADMK, has landed in trouble when he ‘overstepped’ the bounds of speaking up in passing derogatory remarks on the Chief Minister, and the police as well.

Today, Karunas addressed the media at Saligramam and expressed regret for his statements. He also said he is very much at his home and has not gone into hiding.

“As far as I am concerned, I only spoke about the demands of my community”, he said. The founder of Mukkulathor Puli Padai, a caste outfit, Karunas kicked up a controversy while addressing his party cadre at Valluvar Kottam few days ago.

He said, “You can even commit murder. But do so after informing me. There should be justification for it”.

While the police booked cases against Karunas for his controversial speech targeting the Chief Minister and the police, AIADMK senior and State Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar lashed out at him “overstepping” his limits.

Meanwhile, Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan has said that there was no need for disrespectful comments in public discourse.

“There is no need for anybody to disrespect anybody,” he said in Chennai on Friday while responding to a question on MLA Karunas’ rant against the ruling establishment.
