Cops book 4,490 cases on Accident-Free Day: Sunday was observed as an “accident free day” by the city police for creating awareness and ensuring public safety on the roads. Only three minor accidents were reported.
The city police also released 10 simple things the motorists must follow. It ranges from wearing helmets to respecting and giving way for the pedestrians.
During the day, police conducted a special drive against traffic violations, 560 cases of over speeding and rash driving and 2,887 cases of driving without helmet were registered. Totally 4,490 cases of traffic violations were booked on Sunday.
Talking about this awareness initiative, the Joint Commissioner of Police, North Chennai Traffic, T R Ganesamoorthi, said,’This is a first-of-its-kind awareness day to be held in Chennai’.
Police personnel distributed pamphlets on road safety at various junctions to the motorists, and also advised them orally to create an awareness.
According to the police, from 8 am to 6.30 pm, more than 2,000 police personnel from traffic, law and order, besides armed reserve police were deployed at 240 locations for intense vehicle checks.
City police officers claim that their sustained efforts have set off a decreasing trend in fatal accidents in Chennai city for the past few years.
