Continue crackdown against online porn: HC tells cops

The Madras high court has directed the police department to file a report on the action taken against online pornography.

Disposing of a PIL seeking action against online prostitution, the court directed police to continue its action on the matter and said it would monitor the same for some time to ensure seriousness was maintained.

When a public interest ligitation filed by Akbar Ahmed came up for hearing, the bench comprised of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Mahadevan said the court wanted to monitor the police’s action in this regard.

After going through the counter-affidavit filed by Assistant Inspector General of Police, V Bhaskaran on the action taken from 2013 to April 30, the bench said, “We are of the view that no further directions are required in the matter except that the concerned authorities should continue to perform their duties in accordance with law.”

Counsel for the police informed the HC that 244 persons were arrested for online pornography so far and 10 were detained under Goonda Act.

Ahmed submitted that the pornography content displayed online will clearly digress the youths of our country, who are supposed to be a future of our nation.

Ahmed further said pornography was having an extremely bad effect on the youth as well the adults leading to various types of social and medical problems as well as perpetration of crime.
