Consumers with piped gas connections won’t get LPG cylinder as Centre amends key rule

The government has amended the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order to prohibit domestic LPG connections and refills for households that already have a Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connection.

Under the revised order, households with a PNG connection will not be allowed to retain a domestic LPG connection or obtain LPG cylinder refills from government oil marketing companies or their authorised distributors.

Consumers in this category will be required to surrender their existing LPG connections.

The amendment also bars individuals with PNG connections from applying for new domestic LPG connections or receiving LPG cylinder refills going forward.

“No person having a piped natural gas (PNG) connection and also having a domestic LPG connection shall retain a domestic LPG connection, or take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company, or through their distributors. Such persons will be required to immediately surrender their domestic LPG connection,” the order said.

The move aims to prevent dual usage of subsidised domestic LPG and encourage wider adoption of piped natural gas for household cooking, officials said.

In a related advisory, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has directed city gas distribution (CGD) companies to speed up the shift of households to domestic piped natural gas, particularly in localities where pipeline networks have already been installed.
