Reacting to Congress spokesperson and actor Khushbu welcoming certain aspects of the proposed uniform civil code, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee S Thirunavukkarasar categorically said that his party’s opposition to the proposal cannot be compromised.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Thirunavukkarasar saidKhushbu could have taken the “personal” stand from a women’s rights and empowerment perspective, but the party did not subscribe to her views.
“What she stated might have been her personal opinion, but the Congress is opposed to the central government’s move”, he said.
The actress-politician Khushbu Sundar, in a recent interview, expressed her support to the proposed code that seeks to introduce a common set of laws for all religions.
The reported comments have come at a time when the Congress is in the forefront of opposing the Centre’s move to bring in the UCC aimed at ensuring gender equality by putting an end to discrimiantion of women in the Muslim personal law.
A day after Khushbu made the comments, Thirunavukkarasar described them as her personal views and asserted that party would continue to oppose the move to push the UCC.
